Why Become A Referee

If you're on this page, you've at least considered the idea of putting on the jersey, badge, and whistle and taking charge of a game. Refereeing can be an enjoyable and fun experience, and a great way to stay involved in the beautiful game of soccer. Read on for some of the great benefits of being a Referee!

The game needs referees! Referees are there to make sure the game is SAFE, FAIR, and FUN.

Exercise

Refereeing a soccer game is good exercise. You can be outside, running around, and enjoying exciting games, all while making a few dollars. It can keep you in shape for your own sports, help you lose weight, or just let you have some fun.

Earn Extra Income

There are not too many things that a young person can do that pays as well as being a soccer referee. For an adult, it is a great source of extra income. You are self employed. You can work as much or as little you want. You are in control of your schedule. As you gain experience and knowledge in the Laws Of The Game and good game management skills, you will have access to higher levels of competition. As the level of competition increases, so does the pay associated with the games. At the end of a season you will have earned, at the very least, some fun money. You may even have earned enough to finance a vacation or some other worthwhile enterprise. Even more than money, you will earn respect.

Challenge

Life is full of challenges and being a referee is a perfect way to learn how to meet them head-on and know that you can handle them. Soccer is an emotional game. Players get excited. Fans get excited. Coaches get excited. Learning how to manage their emotions while keeping yours in check will serve you well throughout your life.

Good referees also challenge themselves mentally to learn more about the game and the craft of refereeing, physically to be able to run as fast and as long as the game requires, and cooperatively to work well with their partners.

Friendship

Becoming a soccer official is a great way to meet friends that have similar interests. Working with referees with different experiences, abilities, and styles will help your own referee development. Some of the people you will meet will become your friends for the rest of your life. Take the time to become a referee and work games. Learn from experienced referees, and in time pass along your knowledge and experiences to referees coming after you. Refereeing is a very giving avocation.
